Outstanding Volunteer
Award - Anthony Bradford, GDOT, Membership Committee
Chairman Under Anthony's leadership the committee has added several members this year,
far exceeding the new membership for the past several years. Anthony's
infectious enthusiasm for ITS and ITS Georgia have been an asset to the Board
and the Membership Committee. |
| Outstanding Public Member Agency Award -
Federal Highway Administration, Georgia Division
FHWA has been instrumental in getting ITS
Georgia's mission and vision to a
broader Georgian audience. With the ITS Architecture development project FHWA
supported and promoted using ITS as a solution to congestion and safety needs.
In addition FHWA has conducted personalized presentations to all MPOs in the
state with the same message. As a public agency FHWA’s role is to provide
opportunities for advancement of ITS and Operations, and with the help of our
partner agencies GDOT, GRTA and SRTA FHWA has cultivated an ITS rich
environment. FHWA is a major supporter of the TIME taskforce, Regional Traffic
Operations taskforce, ARC ITS subcommittee, Clean Air Campaign and more. FHWA
has been a long-time sponsor of ITS Georgia and TIME annual meetings. This year in
response to the highly visible and fast paced ramp-metering program FHWA sent
two representatives on a national peer review to gain much needed operational
insight, which has led to a more effective design of the system. FHWA has also
brought many national representatives to Atlanta to learn and share their
experiences in areas related to DMS travel times, 511 and Incident Management.
All of which have resulted in the strengthening of the ITS program in GA and has
enhanced the visibility and value to ITS Georgia membership. For this FHWA has
demonstrated they are an Outstanding Public member agency. |
| Outstanding Private Member Award - National
Engineering Technology Corporation (NET)
NET Corporation for their dedication to furthering ITS in Georgia. NET has been
a key player in a number of outstanding initiatives, including NaviGAtor Web.
Through NaviGAtor Web NET has reached out to traditional and non-traditional
stakeholders and garnered interest in ITS and its wide range of benefits. They
have facilitated outreach to emergency responders, and even the Emergency
Management Community, and thereby helped in the creation of a very important
partnership. NET has also graciously volunteered the services of Marcus Wittich
to serve as an active member and effective Committee Chair of the TIME Task
Force. NET is a visionary firm and has gone above and beyond the requirements
of its project scope to further ITS in Georgia. |
| Innovation: Outside the Box Award - Georgia DOT
District 3
District 3 has utilized ITS, particularly video services, to solve several
engineering related problems. Specifically, CCTV’s have been installed in two
locations to assist with design and monitor construction. Designers for the
installation of a turn lane monitored one location, near SR 36 and I-75 in Butts
County. This expedited the design phase by reducing trips to the field and
provided an accurate depiction of before and after conditions. Another
location, at I-475 and Zebulon Rd. is currently under construction and being
monitored via NavWeb. In 3 months, this effort has saved the Department 37
man-hours and over 1000 miles traveled. It has also proven beneficial in
catching small construction problems before they became major. |
| Project of Significance Award - Ramp Metering
Atlanta's Downtown Connector, GDOT
The GDOT Downtown Connector Ramp Meter project has made a quantifiable positive
impact on mobility on the Downtown Connector since they came on-line in April.
These ramp meters were designed and constructer in-house by GDOT. The average time it took to drive from the 5th St overpass to I-20 between the
hours of 3 pm and 7 pm went from 474 seconds to 367 seconds, a 22.4% reduction.
This is an average of all five weekdays. Approximately 35,000-40,000 motorists
travel this section of 75/85 southbound each weekday between 3-7 pm, each of
them experiencing the above reductions in trip times.
Looking at individual days of the week, some days did
even better.
-
Monday's average trip time went from 521 seconds to
360 seconds, a 31% improvement.
-
Wednesday's trip times went from 560 seconds to 336
seconds, a 40% improvement.
-
Even Friday's trip time improved 23.8%
Using
our speed sensors along the highway, we found similar
results. One of the most dramatic improvements was the
scenario on the segment from Courtland Street to I-20.
Prior to activating the ramp meters, the worst trip time
in the afternoon peaked at around 133 seconds to travel
this segment. After ramp meters were turned on, the
average peak trip time (when the freeway was most
congested) from Courtland St to I-20 was only 96
seconds.
Another interesting change was the push-back in the
onset of congestion. Looking at the Williams St to I-20
segment, prior to turning on ramp meters, the freeway
usually became heavily congested in the 3:30-3:45 time
period. This congested period now does not start until
approximately 4:45 to 5:00 pm, allowing an extra 60-75
minutes of free-flowing traffic each day. |
